A Kite-Flying Summer Evening | Plano Family Photography
Some sessions just feel like summer. Warm air, golden light, that perfect kind of wind that makes you want to run barefoot through the grass. That’s exactly what it was like the evening I met up with Nishi and Patrick and their two kids Maverick & Wilder at Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano, Texas.
They brought their kites, and from the second they hit the open field, the kids were all in—racing across the grass, trying to get their kites higher and higher, laughing every time the wind caught them just right. It was one of those perfect summer nights where everything just feels easy and fun—exactly what I love about documentary-style family photography.
Why We Chose a Kite-Flying Session
When Nishi first reached out about booking a Plano family photography session, she knew she wanted something that felt real and relaxed—nothing forced, nothing stiff, just their family doing something they actually love together. That’s what I’m always aiming for with my sessions—photos that don’t just show what your family looks like, but actually feel like you.
So when they mentioned that their kids had been super into kite-flying lately, we knew that was it. A perfect excuse to run wild, get a little messy, and just document this season of life exactly as it is. And honestly? It couldn’t have been better.
The Magic of Documentary-Style Family Photography
This is why I love photographing families this way—letting things unfold instead of trying to control them. No forcing kids to sit still, no awkward posing, just real moments that feel like childhood.
By the time the sun started dipping lower, the kids were windblown, barefoot, and exhausted in the best way. Nishi and Patrick just stood back watching them, laughing, holding onto them for a little longer before heading home. And that’s the kind of thing I want to capture—not just pretty photos, but the stuff you’ll actually want to remember.
